Question in this issue: Car headlights become foggy, yellow due to aging, or water intrudes. What solutions do you have?
1. Drill holes for the headlights to drain water;
Disassemble the car light assembly
This can be said to be the simplest and most cost-effective way!
Directly remove the headlight assembly of the car and find the lowest part of the headlight.
Then use a small drill bit to make a small hole so that the water can flow out.
Aging of car light sealant
In fact, as the service life of the vehicle increases, it is normal for the headlights to age, fog, and accumulate water.
Because generally headlight lampshades are sealed with sealant, and the sealant will gradually age.
Car lights fog up
When the sealant ages, there will be cracks, and water will seep in from the aged cracks.
Eventually, more and more water accumulated in the headlights, and the fog became more and more serious!
Car lights age and turn yellow
In addition, when the headlights are turned on, the bulb temperature is still very high!
The water inside the headlight is baked by the high temperature of the bulb, turning into water mist and adsorbing on the lampshade.
This will accelerate the aging of the interior of the lampshade, and this aging cannot be repaired at all!
Like the taillights on my old Jeep that have aged completely to the point of being opaque;
Drill drainage holes for car lights
Therefore, in order to avoid irreparable damage caused by water accumulation inside the headlight.
You need to drain the water from the headlight as soon as possible!
If you don't mind that much, drill a small hole in the lowest part of the lampshade.
It’s a permanent solution to this problem, and it doesn’t even cost you too much money!
2. Re-seal the headlight;
Headlight breather valve
What I'm talking about here about resealing the headlights is to replace the ring of sealant that seals the lampshade.
In fact, everyone may have a misunderstanding that car headlights are completely sealed.
But that’s not the case. There is a breather valve on the back of each headlight!
The bulb is warm when you turn on the headlights
Because when the headlights are turned on, the bulbs are warm!
The air inside the headlight will expand and contract with heat.
Therefore, a breather valve is needed to balance the air pressure inside and outside the headlight.
The ring of sealant around the lampshade actually serves a waterproofing purpose, not to seal the air.
Replace headlight seals yourself
So if the sealant of the lampshade gradually ages and begins to leak.
It is definitely the most convenient and trouble-free to directly replace the headlight with a new one, but the cost is also higher!
It’s better to prepare yourself a heat gun and a flat-blade screwdriver.
Then buy a new headlight sealant online and you can solve the problem of water seepage from the headlight sealant yourself.
I was in the "Brother Lu Car" episode 156 (How to refit car headlights by yourself, safely, "Original car light disassembly") and Episode 160 (How to refit car headlights by yourself, safely, " "Installing the Lens Assembly").
It shows in detail how to replace the car light sealant yourself, which will definitely help you!
And you can also throw away the aging and yellowing lampshade and replace it with a brand new lampshade to make the car lights shine even more!
