How to fix blurry car headlights

In this Article:Using Glass WaterUsing Masking TapeUsing ToothpasteCommunity Q&AReferences

Blurry headlights plague thousands of car owners around the world. You can use a headlight repair kit or tools purchased at an auto parts store to repair your headlights. This saves you a lot of money on replacing the lights, which is both convenient and affordable. The best thing about this method is that anyone can repair a headlight without special training or special tools. If you can find a non-corrosive "headlight deoxidizer", you can get it done in one minute.

method 1

Use glass of water

1

Determine whether the problem is inside or outside the car's headlight glass. If you see moisture inside, you need to remove the headlight to dry it out. (Before you try the methods below, try a headlight deoxidizer, which saves you time and is non-corrosive.) Determine which steps you can skip depending on how damaged or oxidized your headlight glass is. Do. The worse the condition of the headlight, the more time it will take to clean it. If the headlight is in too bad a condition, it will have to be replaced.

2

If the outside of the car headlight glass is dirty, clean it with glass water or degreaser.

3

Then spray on scratch polish, the abrasive in this spray is all you need.

4

Follow the instructions on the polish bottle and avoid direct sunlight. Do not spray it on black plastic accessories, as it will leave a white film that is difficult to remove.

5

Use a car polisher to clean car lights faster and better. Applying a layer of wax can keep your car lights looking like new for a long time.

Method 2

Use masking tape

1

Make the job easier with 3M's Automotive Headlight Lens Repair System Kit. It comes with tape, sandpaper, polish and instructions, and you can find video demonstrations online.

2

Cover the area around the headlight. Protect the paint with masking tape, not duct tape. Duct tape will peel off car paint.

3

Clean headlight glass.

Use sandpaper. Don’t forget that there are additional steps required after using sandpaper to remove the scratches left by the sandpaper. Start by moistening the sandpaper with soapy water.

Spray cleaner or soap and water (degreaser will work) onto the headlight glass. Then wipe with a clean towel or rag.

4

Remove oxide layer.

Dip your finger in some lens polish or other lens cleaning solution. Apply evenly on the headlight glass while it is still wet.

Get out a sanding sponge or a soft pad and the sandpaper you just decided to use. In most cases, No. 600 is generally used.

Fold the sandpaper into thirds and place it on top of a sanding sponge or soft pad.

Soak the sandpaper and sponge in some soapy water.

Move from side to side, sanding evenly and vigorously, occasionally moistening the sponge and sandpaper with soapy water. (Be careful not to touch the car paint when sanding.)

5

Polish the surface of the headlight glass while keeping the surface moist.

Sand with 1200 grit, then continue with finer 2000 grit sandpaper, and finally with 2500 grit sandpaper. Until the scratches left by just sanding are removed.

After sanding with 2500-grit sandpaper, spray a layer of mist polish on the headlights and wipe it off with a car towel.

Clean the lights with soapy water or car cleaner. This is to remove any remaining polish.

6

Apply wax to the headlight glass.

It’s important to note that this is just a preview of the cleaned headlights. If you are still not satisfied, you can repeat steps 1 to 5 above until the glass is transparent.

To seal, apply a layer of wax or silicone sealant to the sides of the headlight glass.

Fold car towels into four and apply some wax or polish on them. Wait a few seconds for it to completely soak into the towel.

Use a towel to apply the wax layer by layer from left to right until all the wax is applied to the headlight glass.

7

Check the cleanliness of the car lights. Your headlights will be as bright as new after being repaired, and you will be safer driving at night.

Method 3

use toothpaste

1

Wearing rubber gloves, try various types of toothpaste, including gel-based ones. It is best to use a silicone whitening toothpaste.

2

Wash away sand and dust from headlight glass.

3

Don't get cleaners or polishes on paint or plastic.

Use masking tape and plastic wrap to protect paint.

4

Apply a little toothpaste on a car cloth or soft cloth and rub the headlight glass in a circular motion, paying special attention to blurred or scratched areas.

5

Add a little more toothpaste and rub it hard, and you will find that the headlight glass becomes more transparent.

6

When the glass starts to become more clear, add more water and toothpaste. Each lamp should be wiped for 3 to 5 minutes.

7

After wiping is almost done, wash it with clean water several times, and then dry it with a paper towel or soft cloth.

8

To seal, apply a layer of wax or silicone sealant to the sides of the headlight glass.

hint

Soak the sandpaper in soapy water for 5 minutes.

Opening the front hood can wipe all parts of the headlight glass.

Perform headlight repair in a cool area. Do not repair in the sun.

The first step is to use a small sandpaper to remove the discolored layer, and then use a larger sandpaper to remove the scratches left by the previous polishing. (Remember the order: 600=>1200=>2000=>2500).

If the headlights are only yellowed but not scratched, you can use naphthalene and then polish them. You can use 2500-grit sandpaper, but if the yellowing is severe, use 400-grit sandpaper first. In most cases, the more severe the discoloration of the headlight, the rougher the sandpaper will be needed. The higher the number in the sandpaper model number, the finer the sandpaper: 600 (coarsest) => 1200 => 2000 => 2500 (finest).

Before polishing, wipe down the lamp to remove insects, oil, and other contaminants.

Take another piece of sandpaper, in this case it should be 1200 grit. Use the same method to sand, then 2000-grit sandpaper, and finally 2500-grit sandpaper.

Wear protective gear: gloves, goggles, old clothes, etc.

When sanding, the impurities you want to remove will drip down. Keep sanding until the surface is smooth and free of impurities.

Keep water on the sandpaper while sanding. The key to wet sanding is water.

Look for moisture and cracks in your headlights. If there is moisture inside the car lights, it means that moisture entered the lights during assembly. At this time, even cleaning the outside of the headlight can only play a small role in improving the appearance of the light and increasing the brightness of the light. You may need to clean, dry, and seal the plastic lenses inside the headlights to prevent moisture from entering again. You can drill a small hole in the bottom of the headlight, but do not drill holes in glass headlights or closed-beam headlights. Drain the moisture and dry, then seal with a rubber plug or silicone sealant.

All automotive solutions should be gentle on your car's paint, but you should be sure to wipe them off after use. Once these solutions dry, they will have a bad effect on your car's paint!

you need to prepare

Clean rag or towel

bucket of soapy water

Watering bottle (optional)

Rubber gloves (to protect skin)

masking tape

Plastic lens cleaner or soapy water

Polish or other compound (preferably one made specifically for plastic lenses)

At least 4 sets of sandpaper (models are 600, 1200, 2000, 2500). The sandpaper type depends on the degree of oxidation of the headlights (some only require 2500 or 2000 grit sandpaper, check whether it is dry sandpaper or water sandpaper)

Sponge or soft hand pad (to keep water on the sandpaper)

Premium car wiping cloth

Car wax or similar compound

You can buy these things separately, or you can buy 3M's car headlight lens repair system kit. This kit contains some of the tools listed above, but it does not include the more common electric drill polisher with polishing disk, fiber cloth and water. watering can. Here are the complete repair techniques: [1] If none of the above methods work, you can look for a "headlight deoxidizer".
