What are the dangers of incorrect headlight height?
The height of car lights is adjusted at the factory. If the headlights are repaired or replaced later, it is very likely that the light height will be incorrect.
If it is too high, you are obviously turning on low beam, and people will think you are turning on high beam. If the height is too low, you will not be able to see anything 10 meters away at night, which is also dangerous. Today I will share how to adjust it yourself.
- Generally, the adjustment buttons are behind the headlight assembly.
To adjust the height of the headlight, it is installed behind the headlight assembly. We need to open the hood and find a small knob that can be rotated.
The beige knob on the top of this Passat is for adjusting the height, and the knob below is for adjusting the left and right width.
The location may be different in different models, but it can definitely be found behind the headlight assembly. It can be adjusted with an Allen wrench or a Phillips screwdriver.
What preparations need to be made before adjustment?
- Make sure no one is in the car before adjusting, and do not put heavy objects on it.
Before adjusting, we must first make the car unloaded, do not sit in the car, and do not put heavy objects in the car, otherwise the car body will sink, the height will be affected, and the accuracy of the adjustment will be problematic.
If you have a light height adjustment knob next to the steering wheel, first adjust the gear to zero, then find a flat road with a wall, or go directly to the underground garage.
- Measure the vertical height of the low beam light bulb and make a mark
Next we have to measure the low beam and the height of the bulb from the ground. Find a measuring tape, hold it up against the headlight, look at the low beam, and note down the height of the bulb on the tape.
Then make a mark on the wall at the same height, and we will stick it with stickers, one on each side.
This position is the installation height of the headlight and is used as a reference standard for adjustment.
- The vehicle is 3 to 10 meters away from the wall
Then start the car, turn on the low beam headlights, and make the car within 3 to 10 meters of the wall so that you can clearly see the dividing line between light and dark.
What needs to be done when adjusting?
- The height of the dipped beam shall not be higher than the installation height of the lamp
Start adjusting when you are ready. There is a mathematical formula for the adjustment standard. If calculated, it is the height of the low beam, which cannot be higher than the installation height of the lamp.
To put it simply, the sticker we just put on is the height of the lamp. So we adjust the light and dark dividing line of the headlights so that it is no higher than this sticker.
- Keep the left and right lights consistent
There is also a saying on the Internet that the low beam headlights should be lower on the left and higher on the right to prevent them from shaking each other when meeting other cars. This is actually wrong.
There is no such provision in either the "Installation Regulations for External Lighting and Light Signaling Devices on Cars and Trailers" or the "Technical Conditions for Safety of Motor Vehicle Operations".
The so-called left low and right high actually refers to the shape of the light, left low and right high. The professional term is called "asymmetric low-beam front lighting system".
So we only need to ensure that the height of the left and right lights is consistent. It has nothing to do with the height, it is due to the shape.
- The high beam is generally adjusted together with the low beam
Another point is that the high beam is usually adjusted together with the low beam. If your high beam is split, it needs to be adjusted separately. The method is the same.
But the high beam is a large light spot, and there is no clear dividing line between light and dark. So as long as the center of the light spot is aligned with the installation height of the high beam, it's fine.
Some friends may ask how to adjust the width of the light. Because there is an obvious dividing line between the high and low range of the light, it is easy to judge whether it is suitable or not.
- It is not recommended to adjust the light width yourself
But for the width, the range is relatively wide and the boundaries are relatively vague. If you want to adjust it yourself, it is more difficult to judge a reasonable position.
If the light width is really insufficient due to a bump or other reasons, it would be better to go to a 4S shop or repair shop and ask a master to adjust it.
How to change the headlight bulb yourself?
In fact, there are quite a lot of problems in cars that can be easily solved by yourself.
If the headlight bulb doesn't light up, it's really no different from changing a light bulb at home. Just screw it down and screw it up. You can do it by yourself in 2 minutes.
The car key "biubiubiu" has no power when I press it. The 4S shop will charge you a few hundred yuan for an expensive one, and fifty or sixty yuan for a cheap one. In fact, if you buy a battery downstairs for five yuan, you can still get it.
How to change wipers, cabin filters, air filters, and spark plugs by yourself? Mainly because you have never seen them before, so you find it difficult.
I have videos for you step by step. If you follow it, girls will have no problem.
